For years, my wife and I toyed with the idea of getting an RV. Prior to the 2024 Florida RV Super Show, we had attended several other RV shows, participated in meet-ups with YouTubers we followed, and asked plenty of questions to gather as much information as we could. It was only after attending the Florida RV Super Show that we really began to dive deep into researching different RVs.
A few weeks later, we purchased our truck, a GMC 2500 HD, followed by our Alliance Delta 292RL at the Ocala RV Show in March 2024. We had a few dealer-installed upgrades and, just a week later, we moved in and began our full-time RV living journey. While we were excited, we quickly realized that there was so much we didn’t know. We faced issues like broken equipment, incorrect setup, and even realized we were pushing the weight limits of both the truck and the trailer. We also discovered some systems we assumed we understood, but which the dealership hadn’t fully explained.
By May 2024, we were in Athens, Texas, at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA), where I completed the Fundamentals course and the RV Inspector course, becoming a Registered RV Technician and Certified RV Inspector. That experience taught me exactly what we didn't know and highlighted how important proper education is in RV ownership.
A few months later, my wife and I decided it was time for me to complete the rest of the courses at NRVTA to become a Certified RV Technician. This journey allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of RV systems and has prepared me to share this knowledge with you, helping you avoid the mistakes we made and make the best choices for your RV journey.
1. Take an RV Driving Course
If you’ve never driven anything larger than a car, SUV, or a ½-ton pickup truck without a trailer, we strongly recommend enrolling in a dedicated RV driving course. It will help you gain confidence and familiarity with the handling and operation of your RV.
2. Rent Before You Buy
Rent different types of campers, including both motorhomes and trailers, to get a feel for what best suits your needs. This hands-on experience will help you make an informed decision when purchasing your RV.
3. Attend RV Shows
Attend at least three major RV shows, such as those in Hershey, PA, Tampa, FL, and a local event. These shows offer a wealth of information, showcasing a wide variety of RV models and manufacturers.
4. Schedule an RV Inspection
Before making a purchase, it’s essential to have the RV professionally inspected by a third-party certified RV inspector. This will give you peace of mind, ensuring that the RV is in good condition.
5. Take the NRVTA Fundamentals Course
Consider taking the fundamentals course at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, TX, prior to purchasing an RV. This course will equip you with essential knowledge on RV systems, maintenance, and operation.
6. Tour the Factory
If you have a specific manufacturer in mind, schedule a tour of their factory. It’s a great way to understand the quality and craftsmanship that goes into building their RVs.
7. Consult Manufacturers About Modifications & Upgrades
Speak directly with manufacturers about possible modifications and upgrades for your RV. Customizing your RV to meet your exact needs can enhance your travel experience.
8. Discuss Your Travel Plans with Your Family
Have an open conversation with your family about your travel goals, preferred style, and the necessary features you’ll need for upcoming trips. Ensuring everyone’s needs are considered will help streamline the decision-making process.
9. Prepare for Additional Expenses
Beyond the initial cost of the RV, it’s important to plan for additional expenses. Consider accessories, maintenance, insurance, and other ongoing costs that come with RV ownership.
Taking these steps will help ensure that you make the right decision and are well-prepared for your RV journey. Happy travels!
